Brighton Beach and Seafront

My first impression of Brighton’s famed shore was the dark spectre of what I later learned to be the old West Pier. It sits in the sea like a deserted oil rig, and, unbeknownst of its history I was surprised that such a bleak industrial structure would be allowed distract the views of visitors to the famous beach.

Built in 1894, between Florence and Yachats, there is a lighthouse (from 1894) the 56-footas depicted in this postcard. The headland is named after Bruno de Heceta, a Spanish explorer who appeared in the 18th Century, but before that it has been a place where local people called the Siuslaw. Keep Reading
